In an interview with Tim Roche, we discussed the steps Oracle’s Pleasanton campus has taken to reduce waste and his role in enforcing them. He has lived in Pleasanton throughout his life and works as a director for facilities in Oracle’s real estate line of business. He has been with the company since 2012, and his expertise is focused in the Bay Area.
Mr. Roche has two distinct roles, being the director of operations as well as the director of employee services. His job as the director of operations is focused on systems, processes, sustainability, and financial conservation. As the director of employee services, Mr. Roche serves as an event planner, focusing on collaboration and community. He has helped launch the “Use-Reusable” campaign as a step Oracle’s Pleasanton Campus has taken to reduce waste. It involves providing and distributing reusable cups to all regional employees across the Bay Area. The reusable cups are an alternative to paper cups, which were often used in break rooms for drinks or coffee. To encourage and integrate the use of reusable cups, infographics and posters were posted in every break room and lobby. These would include fun facts and comparisons about using reusable. Another effort to achieve zero waste is the Dine with Dishware operation, which was focused on cafes and cafeterias. Often, take-out is used for unfinished food or those in a hurry. Take-out containers generally includes disposable plastic bags or containers, which accumulate tons of trash in the landfill. Mr. Roche's team of 58 employees tackles this problem by offering incentives, like reducing the meal costs if one uses reusable dishware. The utensils and dishware are also made of spudware, created from potatoes and bioplastic from plants. Even more, the company replaced white napkins with brown napkins since the white napkins are bleached, which are non compostable. These examples serve as green alternatives to the traditional disposable cutleries and napkins. By undertaking impactful projects through collaboration and strike team, they reach out to sites across the globe to spread the message and collect the best ongoing practices. Through initiatives, drive, and motivation, Oracle has been successful in working towards the desired goal of zero waste.

The journalism small group is so productive, and it actually feels like you are doing something. You have so many opportunities to collaborate with people you probably would not have met otherwise. I have made so many friends in this small group, and club meetings are always entertaining.
