The social media small group looks different this year. The small group is split into two factions: educational outreach and sustainability media. Members from both groups are supposed to provide posts on the AV Local Leaders’ Instagram page, but their group helps to identify what social media members will post. Sanika N. (11), a social media officer, said that the members of the educational outreach group mostly “research with separate teams and make Instagram posts mainly for education”. The educational outreach serves mainly to educate the public by posting infographics on the Local Leader’s Instagram page. The Sustainability group’s role is “promoting a sustainable lifestyle through social media posts”, using both informative tips and interactive posts to help users and followers practice leading sustainable lives. One famous example of a project by the sustainability group is #SustainabilitySunday, which gives an informative tip every Sunday. Julianne N. (11), who is part of the sustainability group, highlighted an idea that could be implemented like “saving energy during fires and heat waves”. Either way, Instagram still is the main form of social media’s work.
Now let’s get to what these people enjoyed about the Social Media small group. Since all people interviewed are returning members, they have some insights into how the club worked pre-pandemic. Sanika and Julianne really enjoyed the youth outreach group, where they interacted with elementary school students to teach them about composting. Sanika said that her favorite activity was “bringing in worms and newspapers to teach them how to compost and how worms naturally compost”. Julianne was happy about how the students interacted with them, saying “they always want to learn more, and it makes me hopeful that they would be environmentally aware”. While Sanika and Julianne were focused on helping little kids, Ela K. (12) enjoyed impacting communities through field trips. Once, she went on a field trip to Sacramento to talk to both a company that was producing environmentally sustainable products and members of the state capital. She describes that she could “sit in a meeting with the people that worked there and we got to give them our input”. For our club, it shows that “even though we are a club based in a small town, we can still have a lot of ripple effects where we can influence a lot of other people”, as Ela says. This also shows that the “social” in social media not only stands for online communication, but also hands-on interaction with our communities and the ones around us. Thanks to Ela, Sanika, and Julianne for participating in interviews!

The journalism small group is so productive, and it actually feels like you are doing something. You have so many opportunities to collaborate with people you probably would not have met otherwise. I have made so many friends in this small group, and club meetings are always entertaining.
