In a recent interview with Deputy Chief Testa of the Livermore Fire Department, we found out more about what the Livermore Fire Department does when it comes to stopping and preventing fires. As soon as they get a call, their dispatch center will locate the district the fire is taking place in, and depending on what type of fire, they would send the appropriate response. When the dispatch center sends a call to the firefighters, it triggers an alert in the fire stations, on their pagers, and the iPads they have on the fire engines. With the software on these iPads, they are able to communicate with their dispatch center, see the route they have to take, and see any details the dispatch center had put in for them about the fire. The dispatch center also updates them in case it was a small accident or has become a bigger one so they can adjust as needed.
When it comes to fire prevention on the other hand, here’s what Dept. Chief Testa had to say,” We take fire prevention as being one of the highest priorities in our mission. If we can put ourselves out of business, we are a successful agency... Our goal is to prevent the fire before it happens, and if it happens, then our goal is to keep it as small as possible.” The main reason the firefighters come to visit schools is that they want to alert kids and the youth as early as possible. Additionally, they inspect the plans for every building built in our cities, including the commercial buildings both when they are built and on a periodic basis for fire-safe practices. If there is a looming fire close by or in your home, the most important thing to do is get out. Keeping yourself, your family, and pets out of harm’s way is what’s most important. This is why it is essential to have an emergency box with all your important documents and to be prepared when you get a warning. Another thing that many people are unaware of - depending on the size of the fire, not all prevention methods work. One method that many people think is very effective, may one day put them in danger: pouring water over the roof. This is very ineffective, and will not do anything except waste your time and put you in danger. Make sure to think twice and make the right decisions. It is essential to educate yourself on fire prevention and to be prepared in case you ever experience a fire. Fortunately, we have our fire departments like the Livermore Fire Department there to help us out and keep the fires away.
