By Ela Mutaf Local Leaders Current Events Reporter In order to understand Pleasanton we must look at local government, which has two main components. In an interview with Sean Welsh, the assistant city manager of Pleasanton, he explained, “City government is made up of two parts; City Council and the Mayor”. The Mayor Mayors in Pleasanton serve 2 year terms for a maximum of 4 terms and are elected at large. This means that everyone who is a registered voter in Pleasanton votes on the mayor and the candidate who receives the popular vote is elected. Welsh also said, “Mayor Jerry Borne, our current city mayor, has been Mayor for eight years so this year he will be terming out and voted on during the general election.” The mayor is also one of the members on city council, but with added responsibilities. On top of their city council member duties, the mayor sits on numerous regional commissions, work groups, and organizations. For instance, our mayor represents the city of Pleasanton on The league of California cities, which is a working group of the elected officials throughout California. In the interview Welsh provided more examples such as, “The Livermore/Pleasanton Fire Department, Alameda County Mayors Conference, Alameda County Transportation Commision, East Bay Economic Alliance for Business, and [the mayor] sits on a number of sub-committees.” Additionally, the mayor has the unique duty of being part of the US Congress of Mayors which is a conference composed of all the mayors across the U.S. They meet together annually in Washington, DC to discuss aspects impacting their communities. Welsh highlighted a shocking fact, “And through all these responsibilities it is still just a part-time job”. Although they are managing all these responsibilities, many mayors also juggle an additional job. City Council Similar to the mayor, council members are elected by the people. However, this is not done in most cities. Usually the town is divided into smaller districts/areas that have specific council members to vote on. They weigh in on city policy at city council meetings. Any decisions, initiative, or projects agreed on are communicated to the city. In Pleasanton, this is the city manager, who allocates resources and organizes the necessary means to get it done.
Covid Response Our city’s response to the Corona Virus is a perfect example of what steps local government takes for its people. One of Pleasanton's proudest moments was setting up testing early on in the pandemic. The city manager and city council looked into a regional testing site alongside the tri valley cities. They agreed on the Pleasanton Fairgrounds and set up a testing site crucial for getting knowledge and flattening the curve.

The journalism small group is so productive, and it actually feels like you are doing something. You have so many opportunities to collaborate with people you probably would not have met otherwise. I have made so many friends in this small group, and club meetings are always entertaining.
