Amanda has done two projects so far and they have both been personal passion projects. Amanda recently interviewed Oracle on their approach to sustainability. She talked to Tim Roche, the director of facilities for Oracle. They discussed the use-reusable campaign, in which Oracle is trying to motivate their employees to use reusable cups instead of paper ones by giving each of their employees a free club. They are also doing another project doing the dine with dishware operation in which they are trying to reduce the disposable take-out containers and replace them with dishware that can be composted. Amanda and I also discussed her passion for sustainability and how she has learned so much through the club. Amanda’s passion for sustainability comes from her concern for animals and the environment. I also recently spoke to Gayathri about her most recent projects and her position as the artist committee head. Her favorite cartoon this semester was about plastic straws, Gayathri explained, “People today, make plastic straws the center of the environmental campaigns, which is not really true because less than 3% is literally straws. There are also nets, plastic water bottles, and six-pack rings.” She felt that it was important to point out that plastic straws are not the only thing harming the ocean and just stopping plastic straws won’t fix our problem. Gayathri also discussed her current project which involves researching the Pleasanton Climate Action Plan. She is researching the community engagement goal. When discussing this topic Gayathri explained, “It really nice to see words turn into actions.” She is happy about the progress she has seen regarding environmental advocacy within schools, specifically the three bin system. Gayathri also has a large role in the club as the artist committee. She and I discussed her responsibilities as a committee head. She talked about how she and Andrea run the meetings and work alongside Riley and Cassy in the newsletters. Gayathri believes that the best way to save the environment is inspiring others to help the environment which is just what Local Leaders are all about!

The journalism small group is so productive, and it actually feels like you are doing something. You have so many opportunities to collaborate with people you probably would not have met otherwise. I have made so many friends in this small group, and club meetings are always entertaining.
