Angelina Ma As we close in to the end of our first semester, here’s a little update from the Social Media Group for the Local Leaders! Judging by the Local Leaders instagram page (@avlocaleaders psst check them out), the Social Media team has been incredibly busy! The array of colorful posts ranging from educational infographics, club updates, and even trivias series are updated frequently. Social Media’s consistent and high quality work is pushed out efficiently and effectively so let’s take a look at the process of posting and different roles there are in Social Media.
Julianne N, a veteran in Local Leaders Social Media group explains how their group functions “we are divided into a few groups making posts for infographics, sustainability sunday, and interactive stories!” These groups consist of two or three people and rotate roles about every two weeks. However, Social Media is currently working on a special project - Small Group Updates. Social Media Members are split into groups in charge of small groups like Journalism, Fundraising, and Video Media. Much like Journalism’s very own club reporters, these special groups will also be interviewing and writing updates about other Local Leaders groups. Social Media will be posting for each group so don’t forget to check them out! Sanika N explains the reasoning behind this new and untraditional project, “[there has been] challenges in participation just because we truly don't know each other…[we] can’t really see the effects of what you are doing on other people and people cannot see what other groups are doing. She describes how many people feel about the zoom Local Leader meetings: “[they] start thinking that [they] don’t really know much about this club since we're in separate zoom calls, they cannot find their identity…” She, and the other Social Media Head, Ela, decided to have their group members make “little updates of every single small group so they can get a sense of what other small groups are doing” as a way to remedy the indirect social isolation. She added that by posting these updates on Instagram, they could also advertise the activities of the other groups such as the LLC Youtube Channel and Journalism’s monthly newsletter. Despite the abnormal social circumstances Social Media members are adjusting and still creating an impact in our community. Jacqueline L, a new member of the Social Media group is excited about how they could “promote conservation not just people at Amador but by posting it on instagram we can spread awareness to everyone in the public.” Sanika N notes that this was actually a recent change in Social Media’s role. She recalls that “last year was more about documenting what other groups are doing” and how this year the Social Media heads “wanted to take it where we could educate our followers with infographics and different posts about sustainability - more about education then documenting.” And indeed, though not Social Media’s original purpose, their adaptation to this year's shelter in place created more information about environmental policy and sustainability that is spreading quickly through the Local Leader community.

The journalism small group is so productive, and it actually feels like you are doing something. You have so many opportunities to collaborate with people you probably would not have met otherwise. I have made so many friends in this small group, and club meetings are always entertaining.
